Cavan Sullivan, Frankie Westfield, and Indiana Vassilev help extend Union unbeaten streak to 10 matches
Major League Soccer today announced that Philadelphia Union Homegrown midfielder Cavan Sullivan, Homegrown defender Frankie Westfield, and midfielder Indiana Vassilev have been named to the MLS Team of the Matchday following the club's 5-0 victory over San Diego FC at Snapdragon Stadium on September 13.
The trio played key roles in Philadelphia's dominant road performance, helping the Union extend their MLS unbeaten streak to 10 matches and move into seventh place in the Eastern Conference with 33 points. The unbeaten run is now one match shy of tying the longest league streak in club history.
Leading the way was Sullivan, who recorded the first brace of his MLS career while adding an assist. He opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time before netting his second goal in the 62nd minute. Five minutes later, he set up Bruno Damiani's goal to cap a three-goal-contribution performance.
With the brace, Sullivan became just the second player aged 16 or younger in MLS history to score twice in a match and extended his streak to seven consecutive games with a goal contribution.
Sullivan's performance also continued a historic run for Philadelphia, as the Union have now had a teenager score or assist in 11 consecutive MLS matches dating back to May 24, the longest such streak in league history.
Vassilev orchestrated the attack from midfield, recording assists on both of Sullivan's goals.
Defensively, Westfield contributed at both ends of the field. The Homegrown defender assisted on Damiani's 67th-minute strike and helped anchor a back line that limited San Diego FC while securing the club's third consecutive clean sheet.
The Union conclude their two-match Western Conference swing next weekend when they visit Sporting Kansas City. Kickoff from Children's Mercy Park is set for 8:30 p.m. ET, with coverage on Apple TV.
