The excitement continues in the United States, Mexico, and Canada as the 2026 FIFA World Cup enters its second week of group-stage action. With opening fixtures now in the books, here's a look at the key matches to watch as the push for the knockout rounds heats up!
June 18th | South Africa vs Czechia, Atlanta Stadium, 12:00 pm ET
South Africa's Group A campaign began with a 2-0 loss to co-host Mexico in the World Cup opener.
In that opening match, Bafana Bafana lost two significant players, with midfielders Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane sent off which will see the team down both as they take on Czechia. Although South Africa fell short in their group-stage opener, the team's next match could provide a special moment for Philadelphia fans to potentially see Union center back Olwethu Makhanya make an appearance.
With two teams already on the board with three points in the group, Thursday's match presents Bafana Bafana with an opportunity to keep alive their hopes for a place in the knockout stage.
South Africa will have an opportunity to respond to its opening defeat as they prepare to take on Czechia on Thursday, June 18th at 12:00 p.m. ET in Atlanta Stadium.
June 19th | USA vs Australia, Atlanta Stadium, 3:00 pm ET
The United States had a successful first week clinching a 4-1 victory over Paraguay placing them just over next contender, Australia, at the top of Group D.
The United States opened the scoring by forcing a Paraguay own goal in the 7th minute. Two goals from Folarin Balogun sent the United States to halftime with a 3-0 lead, and while Maurício got one back for Paraguay in the 73rd minute, Gio Reyna answered with a fourth to close the dominant match 4-1 win for the Americans.
Assisting in making this win happen was Philadelphia Union Homegrown goalkeeper Matt Freese. Playing the entire 90-minute match, Freese saved Paraguay’s one shot on target along with supporting his squad to maintain control throughout the course of the game. Much of the attention this week has been on another Pennsylvania player with Christian Pulisic being reported as day to day with a calf injury that saw him leave the opening match at halftime.
With both the U.S. and Australia sealing their victories in the opening games, the competitive tension will only grow larger for their match on Friday, June 19th at 3:00 p.m. ET in Atlanta Stadium.
June 19th | Haiti vs Brazil, Philadelphia Stadium, 8:30 pm ET
The city of Brotherly Love is gearing up for their next group-stage match-up in Philadelphia Stadium where Haiti will take on Brazil following a 1-0 loss to Scotland in Boston.
Philadelphia has a big reason to tune in, with Philadelphia Union midfielder Danley Jean Jacques continuing this year’s tournament with Les Grenadiers. Although Scotland were able to nab the win on a breakthough goal from John McGinn in the 29th minute, Danley and Haiti held their own and left many wondering if they could find a way to spring a surprise in one of the toughest groups of the tournament.
Looking ahead to Friday night's matchup against Brazil, this Group C dual will bring an extreme amount of excitement to the city of Philadelphia, as the South American giants are coming off a draw against Morocco.
June 20th | Côte d'Ivoire vs Germany, Toronto Stadium, 4:00 pm ET
The “underdogs” of Group E, Côte d'Ivoire, continue their tournament campaign in their next match against Germany held in Toronto Stadium.
Words can not describe the abundance of excitement from Ivory Coast fans when Amad Diallo scored a late left-footed goal in the 90th minute of the match. As the team continues to train at Philadelphia Union’s facilities, they must prepare going into Saturday’s contest against Die Mannschaft.
Germany made quite an appearance, dominating 7-1 over Curaçao in Houston Stadium. Just 6 minutes into the first half, Felix Nmecha secured the first goal for the Germans. Nico Schlotterbeck headed the ball in for their second goal in the 38th minute, followed by a successful penalty by Kai Havertz to give Germany a comfortable lead going into the second half.
Things began to turmoil for Curaçao as Jamal Musiala swept a strike into the bottom corner just minutes after the start of the second. The Blue Wave held off Germany for a little, but not long enough once Nathaniel Brown scored Germany’s fifth in the 67th minute, soon after Deniz Undav gained a close-range sixth just ten minutes later. Havertz completed his brace in the 88th minute leaving the smallest country in FIFA World Cup history on an unsettling loss.
With momentum on their side and the support of fans both in Philadelphia and back home in Côte d'Ivoire, Les Éléphants will look to carry their confidence into a pivotal showdown against Germany as they continue to show they deserve a spot in the knockout stage.
